RVT – THE FULLY VARIABLE VALVE DRIVE WITH SYSTEM

The RVT system is an electromotor solution for fully variable, camshaft-free actuation of gas exchange valves. It consists of the RVT actuators, electronic controlling unit and customized software.

LSP is setting new standards with the RVT: The patented electromotor drive impresses by combining maximum torque with dynamic action and an innovative rotary axis concept that features high power density allowing it to be used in diesel, petrol, gas or even hydrogen engines.

The system is available in passenger car (RVT Twin) and heavy-duty (RVT Twin HD) performance classes. Renowned clientele are already using the system to experiment with innovative, dynamic combustion processes in hopes of increasing efficiency. Even transient processes during acceleration or braking with the engine can be fully and accurately displayed with the RVT.

Areas of application

Well-known OEMs use the RVT system for researching and optimizing charge exchange control as well as to evaluate and test innovative, dynamic combustion processes (e.g. dual-fuel engines, blended fuels, pilot injection, synthetic fuels/e-fuels and additives (Ad-blue)).

We believe that the key to more ecologically-minded mobility lies not only in new technologies like electric or hydrogen drives, but also that “traditional” engines will be indispensable in certain segments over the long term – i.e. that the challenge is to make combustion engines more efficient and reduce emissions even more substantially. As a high-precision research instrument, the RVT’s measurements contribute to the development of more efficient combustion engines that produce fewer pollutants.

In addition to fully replacing the camshaft, the RVT also offers increased freedom in terms of research. Valve opening and closing times as well as valve control times can be changed significantly and, thanks to precision valve closure, impact speeds can be achieved that are similar to those of mechanical camshafts. The RVT concept fits any type of combustion engine, regardless of whether it has vertical or inclined valves.

We would be delighted to advise you on the specific requirements of your project!

The advantages at a glance

Precision results and excellent repeatability

The RVT operates 100% electrically and completely dispenses with springs as well as hydraulic or pneumatic elements, all of which eliminates the unavoidable vibrations of the combustion engine that would otherwise influence the control behavior of the actuator. Thanks to this patented design, the actuator – as a segmented synchronous motor – impresses with its excellent control time accuracy and precision opening and closing dynamics. In turn it offers the highest measuring accuracy and guarantees exact repeatability even in measurement series of 10,000 or more repetitions.

Modular concept from single to multiple cylinder engines

LSP has a modular system of different actuator configurations that cover the entire range of commercially available cylinder heads for passenger cars as well as commercial vehicles. Regardless of whether the valve axes are parallel or at a certain angle to each other, we have suitable housing formats for all diesel and gasoline engine designs. Through the exchange of modular components, the actuators can be adjusted for the valve throw of the cylinder heads.

Fully variable control of load changes

In terms of phase position, opening time or lift curve shape, all modifications to the valve stroke profiles are even possible during engine operation. This allows for unlimited experimentation of the dependence of the gas exchange process on the combustion process. Each valve can be controlled individually and can be visualized via standardized communication interfaces.

Comprehensive diagnostic functions ensure high level of reliability

It’s easy and fast to operate using the intuitive interface. Extensive error routines and diagnostic queries derived from a system FMEA enable flawless test bench operation anytime. Safety-relevant signals are routed redundantly. There are several channels with different cycle times for communicating with the test bench environment in order to transmit the signals as quickly as possible based on their priority.

No wear, no maintenance

The RVT does its job, whatever you throw at it. The system is wear- and maintenance-free and thus not only extremely robust and reliable, but also extremely durable.

First-class support and advanced development!

The fully variable valve train RVT has already been used successfully for 16 years. Over that time it has also been continuously improved. As an RVT user, you will benefit from our innovative strength in the future and even bring your requirements/requested features to their natural next development stage.

We not only place great importance on the performance of tomorrow, but also on your satisfaction “today”! Continuous and personalized customer support with high availability and short reaction times for test bench problems or technical questions – that is a given for us. Our success is not based on one-time sales, but on many years of loyal cooperation!

Quick and easy integration

The RVT is virtually a “Plug & Play” system – it supports all common crankshaft sensors and engine control units and can be easily connected to various series cylinder heads using an adapter plate. This allows the RVT system to be seamlessly integrated into any existing test bench environment and is fully operational within just a few days!

Our team carries out the commissioning at your site and also provides your staff with detailed training, which eliminates time delays, installation problems and hidden defects.
